Description

The British Public - The British Public

Robert Gregory has been recording music in one way or another since he was 13 years old. Under various guises his project hopping has landed him safely as songwriter and front-man of his irresistible incarnation – the British Public. Slacker rock is back with a heavy dose of satire; endless irresistible hooks; words that catch fast in your head; and walls of heavy grunge-fuelled guitars.

One of Cambridge’s most promising new bands, the group is a celebration of British peculiarity in all its guises through the medium of perfect, quirky rock.

These adventures through the great and the grim of In-ger-land are the first threads unraveling in the intricate web of weirdness that inhabits the bursting brain of The British Public - aka Robert Gregory.

The self-titled debut album follows double A Side single ‘Breasts’ and ‘Bears’ on limited edition 7” vinyl, which was followed by Bloodsports - both of which were featured by Itunes as a Noteworthy New UK Singles. With radio support from new music gurus Steve Lamacq, Gideon Coe, Maconie & Radcliffe (BBC Six Music), John Kennedy (Xposure - XFM), John Hillcock (New Noise/BBC 6 Music) the British Public’s reputation is quickly growing.

The British Public had no real birth place or starting point. A demo largely made up of random songs was recorded in a church in Fremantle, Western Australia, in January 2009. In May of the same year ‘Breasts’ and ‘Bears’ came to be in the Half Ton Studio in Cambridge – recorded, engineered, and mixed by Neil James Rogers (Buggs/Hofman).

Reviews

"Nirvana-shaped demons hiding in the closet" Artrocker

"What Message In A Bottle by the Police would sound like if played by Nirvana. It's actually the British Public...triumphant." Stuart Maconie, BBC 6 Music

“All riffs and wry eyebrows…The best bits of 90s alt-rock. As I contemplate the killer hooks, the buzzing feedback, the wry lyricism, the vocal dead-eyed stare ... it’s brilliant!" Jon Hillcock (New Noise – BBC 6 Music)

“Tip top tunes” John Kennedy (XFM - Xposure)

"Slacker rock like Beck. Infectious pop ditties with a wink and a twisted smile" Music-Zine
